For this Level 2 course, you have a wide range of choices for instruments. You can successfully deliver a wonderful Sound bath with a small number of instruments, and expand as you continue on your journey. It really depends on what types of instruments you are drawn to! This course will share techniques for using Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, Crystal singing bowls, hand held frame drums, and your voice.
We also include a few other instruments that can be used as accompaniments - such as shakers, chimes, sansulas and others. To get started you will want to have at least one main instrument (such as a gong or Tibetan bowls), and a few others such as a drum or chimes or rain stick. It is not necessary to have a large collection to start, but do think about how you will use different instruments to create an array of sounds, and a diverse soundscape for your meditation. Many people begin with one gong (or one or two crystal bowls) and then build from there.
Below are suggestions for what to look for when buying your instruments, and what else might be needed when you make your purchase.
Tibetan (Himalayan) Bowls
One bowl can be used beautifully in a sound bath. However, to create more sounds and be able to create deeper shifts, you can acquire 3 bowls of varying sizes and notes to enable you to create both harmonious and dissonant healing intervals
Also needed:
- Suede covered mallet (Vegan options for mallets)
- Wooden mallet
- Felt covered drum / gong beater
How to Choose a Tibetan Singing Bowl
Gongs
There are many gongs to choose from these days, and bigger is not always better! If you are planning on using your gong as a main source of sound in your sound baths, you will want to look at a gong around 30". Smaller gongs have excellent sound, but do not resonate as long as a bigger gong, or have the depth of sound. It's great to combine one or more gongs to get a range of tones during the sound bath. Start with one, and grow from there as needed. Ideas are below.
- 1 large sized gong on a stand - around 30"
- 1 medium sized gong on a stand - around 65 cm / 25 inch diameter (plus or minus 5 cm / 2 inch)
- 1 small hand-held wind gong - around 45 cm / 18 inch diameter (plus or minus 5 cm / 2 inch)
- 2 mallets of different sizes to match the size of your gongs
Crystal Singing Bowls
Just like with Tibetan bowls, one crystal bowl can work in beautifully with a sound bath. To be able to create intervals and triads, you will need at least 3 bowls of varying sizes and notes to enable you to create both harmonious and dissonant healing intervals
- Suede covered mallet (Vegan options for mallets)
- Mallet with rubber ball – especially for playing frosted bowls
Hand-held frame drum
Drums add a wonderful component to a sound bath. And 1 of these is all you need – at least 12 inches | 30 cm in diameter.
There are many other instruments that add interesting components to your sound bath, and really the options are limitless! Start small, and grow as needed. You will find that there are certain instruments and sounds you connect with more than others, and as you discover that - you can add to your collection.
We are happy to help you purchase these instruments.
